While these digital tools provide great benefits, it’s important to be mindful of online safety.

Beware of Scams

Scammers often target older adults, using increasingly sophisticated tactics to appear legitimate. If you receive an email that feels urgent or asks for payments, gift cards, or personal information, it’s safest to mark it as spam or delete it. Avoid clicking on any links or providing personal details. If you’re uncertain about the legitimacy of an email, especially if it appears to come from a trusted source like your bank, close the message and contact the institution directly to verify. Do not call any phone numbers listed in the message; instead, call the number on the institution’s website or the back of your debit or credit card.

Safe Posting Practices

Be mindful of what you share online. Avoid posting personal details such as banking information, your location, addresses, or information about your grandchildren like their names or schools. Criminals can use such information to their advantage. Always remember that not everyone online is who they claim to be.

Shopping Online

Everyone loves a good deal, and the internet is full of them. However, not all websites are trustworthy. Before making a purchase, ensure that the site is a legitimate business to protect yourself from potential fraud or theft of your information.

Strong Passwords

One of the simplest ways to protect your online accounts is by using strong, unique passwords. Avoid using easily guessed information like your name or birthdate. Instead, create a password using a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters, and remember to change it regularly.

The internet offers numerous benefits, particularly for those over 50. It can be a fun, engaging, and helpful tool when used safely. Always prioritize your online security, and don’t hesitate to seek help from someone you trust if needed.
